Getting employers to #respectFDWrights

This week, we focus our attentions on local campaign, Respect Our Rights, which draws light to the human rights violations that foreign domestic workers (FDWs) experience. According to the campaign runners, although the main target audience was the employers of FDWs, the campaign ended up having more engagement among FDWs.

After some brainstorming, we came up with 3 ideas on how to better reach out to employers.

1. Bite-sized is better

Employers need to be better educated on what rights their FDWs are entitled to. Rather than simply leaving a link to the MOM website, which will remain unread unless the user is already keen on learning more about FDW rights, Respect Our Rights could make the information more bite-sized.

They could create a series of eye-catching graphics that feature snappy one-liners (e.g. "You FDW is entitled to one rest day per week") in large fonts so that they will be hard to miss. These could be scheduled across a period of time.

2. Students as conduits of information

Many of us students are privileged to have FDWs living in our homes to help out with our chores. By educating us about FDW rights, we can pass on the information to our family members. Respect Our Rights could conduct roadshows in university campuses to share the stories of FDWs and guide students to their social media for more updates. To save costs, they could recruit student volunteers for the event.

3. Targeted advertising using Facebook Ads

Don't ask us how it works, but Facebook Ads can be uncannily accurate. Respect Our Rights could set aside a portion of their budget to reach their target demographics through the power of Facebook's algorithms.

The awful FDW abuse stories need to stop; we hope our suggestions will be helpful in getting more people to #respectFDWrights!
