Bridging the digital divide digitally

The effects of digital inequalities are real. Madianou (2015) observed how middle and upper class people are able to harness the potential of social media in the aftermath of a disaster to improve their lives. In contrast, lower-income groups who are unable to gain access to technology are left behind in the recovery process, resulting in deepening social inequalities. If communication technologies are the cause of perpetuating these inequalities, can it instead be strategically used to bridge this divide? By looking at how international NGOs such as Close the Gap are attempting to use the internet for their cause, we argue that the divide can be closed.

The internet facilitates micro to macro communications where groups in need are able to find help via various communication channels. Close the Gap enables individual projects happening in developing countries to transcend geographical limitations and make applications to acquire computers through their website and emails.

Transactional features are also increasingly secure and allows for individuals to directly contribute by making donations online via a few simple clicks. Contributions can also be made by companies who are interested to donate their used IT equipment, thus preventing e-waste and turning them into a sustainable economic resource.

Furthermore, communications to the masses are facilitated through the use of social media, allowing NGOs to create awareness about the digital divide through constant updates of current ongoing projects and highlighting key issues through creative ways. Here's a look at an effort made by Close the Gap to educate their target audience.

Media tools also allows for NGOs to put together a better argument and allow for potential donors to better understand the organization's approach to the issue.

To conclude, the digital divide can be addressed digitally, by making use of the technological tools we already possess.
